The
Situation
When
Owens Corning opened its Composites Plant to produce glass fibre
in Guelph, Ontario almost 50 years ago, the only close neighbors
were represented by the occasional inquisitive deer or squirrel. The
passage of time, however, witnessed the growth of residential housing
surrounding the plant. Time, and progress, had also created the
need for Owens Corning to build an oxygen plant to lower production
costs and reduce harmful air emissions.
Without the proper acoustical treatment,
an oxygen plant can produce internal noise levels that can cause
ear damage within an hour for plant workers not wearing ear protection.
For Owens Corning's particular installation, predicted noise levels
outside the plant walls, estimated to be well under legal limits,
would have been much less severe. After being a good neighbour for
50 years, however, Owens Corning wasn't about to change. Instead
they looked to ATCO Noise Management to keep the peace (and quiet)
in the neighbourhood.
The
Solution
Contracted
with the acoustical design, supply and installation of the noise control treatment
for the new plant, ATCO began by applying its L-Type assembly, with
a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of 58, to the walls facing the neighbourhood housing.
ATCO used its E-Type assembly with the lower STC rating of 49 for
the roof and the walls facing away from housing.
The plant’s ventilation system was
designed to move 30,000 CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) and dissipate
550,000 BTU/hr (British Thermal Units/hour) of heat expelled from
the equipment. ATCO was able to control this major source of noise
leakage by designing and installing an intake fan with damper, silencer
and filter unit; two exhaust silencers with dampers; and structural
supports. As part of the contract, ATCO also designed, supplied
and installed the plant’s electrical system, complete with building
and emergency lights, oxygen-level monitoring equipment and building
controls.
Within the field of environmental noise
attenuation, ATCO Noise Management's mandate is to continue supplying
appropriate solutions so that Owens Corning and other companies
like it can continue to be good neighbours…
About
Us
As
a company providing a full turnkey service to its clients, ATCO Noise
Management is responsible for all acoustical design, material procurement and
construction. This has enabled us to accumulate a comprehensive database
of material and labour costs which
are incorporated into the
acoustical design model, resulting in cost effective solutions to noise
problems. We also offer ambient noise surveys, regulatory review,
preparation of acoustical specifications, budget pricing and post-construction
testing. |
