Caribbean Utilities
Design and supply of the structural steel, acoustical envelope, and acoustical building ventilation system for the 24 MW diesel power plant

Description:
24 MW Diesel Power Station
Georgetown, Grand Cayman Island

Owner:
Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC)
Grand CaymanCayman Islands

Customer:
Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractors A/S (BWSC)
Allerod, Denmark

Performance Target:
Acoustical building designed to achieve:
63 dBA at 200 feet (61 meters)

Remarks:
ATCO Noise Management's proprietary acoustical assemblies formed the walls and roof of the power plant. The assemblies consisted of layers of acoustical and barrier materials covered by a metal exterior. The layers were applied onto a structural steel frame and built to withstand winds of 150 mph (240 km/hr).

ATCO Noise Management also supplied the acoustical ventilation system with air flow of 300,200 cubic feet per minute (510,000 cubic meters per hour). To limit noise break-out from six ventilation openings, ANM custom-designed acoustical plenum chambers to line the openings. Two additional acoustical plenum chambers were constructed around the combustion air intake openings. An acoustical ridge vent (gravity ventilator) silenced noise emissions from the roof ventilation exhaust.

A special feature of the new building was that ATCO Noise Management designed it to be expandable. The plant has two engines producing 24 MW of electricity with room to add another 12 MW engine. To accommodate three more engines in the future, a removable end wall was designed into the building's structure.

ATCO Noise Management also supplied a 33 ton crane for equipment removal and installation.
