ATCO Midstream Gas Plant

Scope of Work:
ATCO Noise Management conducted diagnostic noise measurements and acoustically treated two radiator coolers, an amine cooler and a propane cooler. The acoustical treatment of the coolers involved the design and installation of:

  • acoustical baffles
  • acoustical barrier walls

Technical:
Acoustical treatment was designed to achieve 35 dBA at 560 m.

Remarks:
ATCO Midstream's Watelet Gas Plant is located 560 m from a farmhouse in rural central Alberta. Noise from the coolers was affecting residents as well as exceeding the 40 dBA nighttime noise level set by the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (AEUB). The company also planned a plant expansion, so wanted to reduce the noise to a level that would accommodate growth and not bother its neighbours even when adverse weather would amplify the sound. ATCO Midstream contracted ATCO Noise Management to measure existing noise levels and design a treatment for the individual noise sources. The acoustical design achieved 35 dBA at the nearest sensitive receiver under wind-neutral conditions. Post-construction measurements confirmed the noise reduction.
